Puppy’s have a bit of a monopoly of cute facial expressions - so bright and aware (or just plain dopey and innocent) - at any rate they are a source of such delight to owners - and to this photographer.

Its a precious time when you are young and puppies make the most of it if they are given love and good training to be themselves - and not troubled by confusion or bad experiences.

Did you ever hear a story about a Tiger who became a Monkey? You may have read, loyal reader :P, how a certain cat came into a house I was visiting in New Zealand over Christmas - walked right in from nowhere and made herself at home, for a while, before taking off again.

She was a familiar face in the neighbourhood but our hosts didn’t know who she really was or her name.

I met him visiting the in-laws in Wellington New Zealand over Christmas. Apparently no one quite knows where he lives - or if he even has a home. However he is well known around the street and seems to be quite busy visiting everyone. 

He also seems quite healthy - maybe because he’s very smart at looking after himself.

Emily is one very sweet girl - despite her history (which we learned that she was imprisoned under a house for most of her life), she’s learning to walk and explore again. She still remains cheerful and happy - and trusting. A sweet, gentle dog and I love her chocolate and white markings - very unique.

The inner city is teeming with cute dogs these days. Meet one: Bernard - to me probably the cutest city dog I ever met.  He’s barely 3 months old.

If cuteness was a crime he’d get a life sentence. He has an adorable personalty and pretty much melt the heart of anyone who sees him. I love this guy!

I have to agree - she has attitude, but she is still very pretty. For one thing - pretty fluffy!

Her bad mood was not my fault (I hope!). She had just moved in to a new home and was a little miffed by the inconvenience.

Poor pigs! A shame considering how generally photogenic they are.

So we were pleased as could be when twoguineapigs was given the job of photographing Gertie. We're not called "twoguineapigs" for nothing you know. We love these people.

Recently a few potential clients have been asking me for (printable) digital files of photos rather than prints. How much are they, is the first question (usually).

When I tell them, that’s when I hear the sound - a great big “thump” or a “gasp” as they recover from collapsing to the floor in a faint of bill-shock!

Some people it seems don’t expect digital files to come with a price. Both AWDRI Star Pups are currently boarding at the Solar Lodge Kennels and are looking for a long-term relationship. 

At 9 months, these 2 fine young gentlemen are gorgeous and are such a joy to be with. I was  impressed by their good behaviour and their enthusiasm to learn and please.

And the first App I downloaded to my iPhone when I got it is still my favourite -  Instagram!

Cats only understand the English they want to hear (like “dinner is ready”). Other forms of English don’t impress them so much - such as a photographer demanding “Look here kitty!”. Its hard work believe me.

She’s a gorgeous and gentle 3 year old Shar Pei. Though she can be a little shy (I equate that to her being independent, calm and composed), Lucy has an expressive and winning personality. He’s missing one paw, not that you would notice if no one had pointed it out. And he just found a new home.

Whether Mozart was born with a missing paw, no one knows. He was checked into Blacktown pound last December and was rescued by Monika’s since.

I had the privilege to observe his adoption last Tuesday.

Later, when I was in my teens, I was able to take photos in colour, as film then didn't cost as much as when it was first introduced. However I've always appreciated black-and-white (really, it is actually varying shades of grey). Sheila is a 6 month old Australian Cattle Dog, she is deaf and she needs a home.

We drove out to Mt Annan where Sheila lives with her foster family, the Hunters, and spent the late afternoon ‘hanging out’ in the backyard and then at the nearby Reserve.

It is quite different when photographing for myself — the images I make are usually more edgy and I tend to bend the rules a lot.  It is addictive to be working on personal projects as it’s like embarking on a self-discovery journey, to explore, to experiment, to learn, and to ‘see’. And I like sharing these things.

I didn't think much of this as I thought he would outgrow it like Mr Big.

Last Tuesday, I took him down to see an exotic animal Vet after I’d spoken to his regular Vet. I don’t admit to being a good cook. I promised the kids at home (yes, I have four-legged fur faces as children) their treats on Valentine’s Day, so I decided to bake a fish fillet for the cats and whip up some hay and greens for the guinea pig. The cats had tried this dish before — PF liked it and Mr Big didn’t seem to mind.

Luckily we live near the water so we get the odd sea breeze or two. 

The cats and Wiggley usually cope well in this heat. Though sometimes I wonder if they need a shave.

I found out that Wiggley has a new favourite spot apart from his ‘first class’ TV lounging seat — the Chaise Lounge. The lounge sits in one of the coolest spots in the flat which also happens to be the cats’ and our favourite spot. I’m blessed with a fantastic (and very honest) partner who supports and understands my quirks; my family overseas who believes in me; and great friends who know and love me.

Well, this year’s Christmas shoot has proven that the guinea pig is the pro! Wiggley is also the oldest amongst the remaining furballs we consider as kids in our household. (Ginger would have put the cats in their places). Anyway, the boys didn’t pack their own stuff. The cats did wonder about the fuss and hid when the removalists appeared. I must say they coped very well with it over the last 3 weeks.

In the mid of moving to our new home, Ginger passed away peacefully in his sleep on 10th December 2010, around 9.30pm. I remember checking up on the boys half hour before that. I guess he just wanted to leave quietly.

Yet we have been having almost non-stop rain for the last two days. I'm not complaining. I like the rain. I like cold weather.

Going by the American Cavy Breeders Association or the Australian National Cavy Council Inc, Wiggley though sporting a crest on his head, is not considered to be  crested. He has too many colours (not his fault)! Wiggley would be called a tri-colour or broken colour cavy because his coat has three colours.

By that I mean my intention is to showcase the subject in an aesthetic way so that it is still recognisable in an non-abstract way. Nor do I require a macro lens for this to be effective. This is why I normally photograph in a documentary style — to show details without losing too much of the context.

You guessed it, his daily routine, well, is quite simple. Wakes up only at the sound of us making breakfast. Goes back to sleep. Wakes up only at the sound of dinner. Goes back to sleep. And the routine repeats itself. Ok, maybe in between all that he ventures out into the garden but only for a little while. He usually appears 'larger' than the other guinea pig when photographed, or perhaps it is the way I portray Wiggley knowing that he's the slightly larger guinea pig of the two.

Despite all the cat toys and such we invested in to get them active, they would rather lie in bed the whole day while the rest of us are busy working away.
